My old wife and
eight children are being lodged at a strange county, and the windy and snowy
winter keeps me apart from them. How can I bear to leave them alone too long? I’ m just to join them in the hope of sharing

I didn’t know we’re off today until I cycled
to the locked gate of our school. I made sure of the fact before leaving for
home by inquiring of our principal. I only learnt that the Central School in
our town has closed since yesterday afternoon for the bad conditions of the
snow-covered
roads. This morning the icy roads became dangerous to all the vehicle drivers. Yesterday
I retreated from school early and this morning I found no information about the
closure of school in the communication space of the staff on the phone. Next time
under such circumstances I must phone our principal first before setting out.

The rainy weather continues. The prolonged
drought comes to an end temporarily. The temperature drops sharply with the
help of chilly wind. On my way to school, I saw large grey clouds were so low
across the vault of heaven. The new thickening poplar leaves were rustling in
the wind. In such weather, people put on the thick clothes just taken off to
keep warm. The sprouts in the open are shivering with cold and their growth
comes to a standstill. But the greens in the greenhouses are an exception. It was
forecast that the temperature will rise to 30 degrees the coming Friday.

Transported back the firewood and coal collected at school. The firewood is the young elms felled last spring, which has been dry. Recently I have been thinking carry it home at the weekend with the coal flour with brother’s trike. But it occurred to me in the afternoon to take it back with brother’s van immediately when I found the wood was too much. I phoned the idea to him. He hesitated at first and tried to delay his help to another day. When I told him I had moved the wood to the gate and trimmed it as he demanded, he reluctantly agreed.

The warm spell brought back throngs of flies indoors.
Harvest season. Here in northeast, farmers began to get in their corn, cabbages and radishes. I suppose in my native country in north China it must be a different scene. The corn has long been reaped and the seedlings of winter wheat might have sprouted out in the fields now. The local people there maybe are digging up their sweet potatoes, storing the intact in the deep well-like cellars and drying the bruised by cutting them into pieces. The unforgettable interesting thing in my childhood was to search for the remnants in the harvested plots and braise the thin ones on the spot.

Don’t throw away the leftovers, please,
which may be taken when you are in need tomorrow.

sharing distress with you, or you’ll feel regret and lonely when past your frivolous
